Collecting Odd & Collectable Bullion Coins?
Hi, I'm wondering who sells really odd & collectable silver & gold coins. I'm even willing to pay over spot for them. Are there any good websites that sell these type of coins. For instance I'm looking for some Star Trek gold bullion coins but I'm not will to pay $125 over spot for a 1/4 ounce gold coin that is being sold on eBay.

The thing is, there's a big difference between being truly collectible and simply having market appeal. The Star Trek item you mention is a good example of the later. Sure, there are a lot of Trekkies that find it appealing, but to everyone else it's just bullion... and not very reassuring bullion at that. I suspect there are very few true collectors of such a thing. That means the secondary market has a very specific customer, and one who is not necessarily a gold-bug. I doubt there's a coin dealer or pawn shop out there who'll even give spot for one. High to buy; low to let go! Star Trek gold coin = odd, but not collectible in a numismatic sense Gold Kangaroo = a little odd and a fairly collectible Pre-revolution Russian gold coins = very odd and quite collectible Pre-33 U.S. gold = not odd, but extremely collectible |

Send the seller a message, offer him spot or whatever it is you want to pay. He may bite, as by his own admission on the auction.....
"We've sold less than a half dozen of these in the past 20 years and we've probably sold more than anyone else." I'm sure he'd like to sell them faster than that. |

Then I'd pass. Let him keep it. Like the other poster said "I doubt there's a coin dealer or pawn shop out there who'll even give spot for one". Some things aren't worth chasing. Collect something else with a broader fan base.

I agree with others
That is a EXTREMELY small market. Who was the maker? Are they all just one size?? Does it come with a COA?? |
Re: Collecting Odd & Collectable Bullion Coins?
Small market appeal sucks, buy one if you really want it and don't plan on selling. I got a rare mexican 1/4 oz gold bullion coin heaped in with other bars and rounds on a trade with my coin dealer. After I looked it up and asked him about it he told me nobody would buy it for what it is and he just tossed it in with the general bullion.

Don't waste your time, you have no guarantee they are even real. :36_1_30:
Nothing about actual mintage numbers, who minted them...only that they have sold less than 6!!! :504::504::504: |

He'll never sell them at this rate because most of us in PM's understand that they are worth spot at best. He's seling gold at $1919.80 an ozt.! I have to agree with Curmudgeonista Star Trek gold coin = odd, but not collectible in a numismatic sense Gold Kangaroo = a little odd and a fairly collectible Pre-revolution Russian gold coins = very odd and quite collectible Pre-33 U.S. gold = not odd, but extremely collectible Either put that money in pre '33's or get as much bullionas you can right now. The price of gold will only effect privately minted limited collectable sets by the weight of the coin. Nothing else. You'll never recoup the premiums he is asking for. |
